4 Students Lose Lives in Stampede at Cusat Festival, Kerala CM Assures Swift Investigation

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a festive atmosphere turned into tragedy at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) as four students lost their lives and more than 60 were left injured in a stampede-like situation during a concert featuring the talented singer Nikhita Gandhi. The incident unfolded as rain added chaos to the open-air auditorium, triggering a rush among the audience.

The Scene Unfolds

Singer Nikhita Gandhi was captivating the audience at the open-air auditorium when the unexpected stampede occurred. Health minister Veena George confirmed that the injured students were swiftly transported to Kalamassery Medical College. Unfortunately, two boys and two girls were pronounced dead upon their arrival at the medical facility.

CM’s Assurance and Ministerial Action

Expressing profound sorrow, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took to X to share, “The entire state is in shock over the stampede that unfolded at CUSAT University in Ernakulam. Heartfelt condolences go out to the family members of the four students who lost their lives.” He assured immediate and enhanced treatment facilities for the injured and informed that Ministers P. Rajeev and R. Bindu were en route to Ernakulam to assess the situation directly. The Chief Minister emphasized a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident.

Condolences and Sympathy

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan extended his condolences, stating, “Deeply shocked and grieved to know about the sad demise of four students at a stampede at Cochin University of Science & Technology. Heartfelt condolences to their families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

University’s Account

The Vice-Chancellor of the university shed light on the incident, revealing that the stampede occurred during a musical program amidst the ongoing fest. He explained, “Today there was a musical program. Students from neighboring colleges also attended the program. Unfortunately, the crowd was huge. More than 2,000 people came inside, and there was a rush at the stairs.”

Unraveling the Details

According to a civic official, the stampede was exacerbated by the same exit and entrance to the auditorium. Municipal councillor Pramod, in a statement to news agency ANI, described the grim scene, “Students who were entering the auditorium fell down at the stairs, and the crowd trampled them.
