NCW visit to Kolkata gang rape survivor

National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar visited South Calcutta Law College, where a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped by three individuals, including an alumnus and two current students. The incident occurred on June 25, and the police have since arrested four persons, including the main accused. A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case

NCW’s Concerns and Police Response

During her visit, Majumdar expressed concerns that the police were not allowing her to meet the victim or visit the crime scene. She also claimed that the victim and her family were being hidden somewhere, and the police were unaware of their whereabouts. “The police do not want us to meet the victim’s family,” Majumdar said. The NCW had planned to visit the survivor’s house to assess the situation, understand the family’s needs, and evaluate the police’s response

Government Reaction and Protests

The ruling Trinamool Congress government criticized Majumdar’s visit, questioning why the NCW did not visit other states with similar atrocities. West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya suggested that the NCW should visit states like Manipur and Odisha. Meanwhile, protests erupted across the city, with various groups demanding justice for the survivor and improved safety measures in educational institutions. The BJP and Congress held protests, alleging a worsening law and order situation in the state

Investigation and Arrests

The police have arrested four individuals in connection with the gang-rape, and a SIT has been formed to investigate the case. The NCW member’s visit and concerns have added to the scrutiny of the police’s handling of the case. The case has sparked widespread outrage and demands for action against the perpetrators
