Prada Pays Tribute to Indian Craftsmanship

Italian luxury fashion house Prada has officially acknowledged the cultural roots behind a key footwear design showcased in its Men’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection in Milan—marking a significant gesture towards honoring traditional Indian craftsmanship.

📰 From Milan Runway to Maharashtra Origins

After sparking a wave of criticism earlier this year at Paris Men’s Fashion Week 2025, where footwear resembling the iconic Kolhapuri chappals appeared in Prada’s show, the brand has now addressed the inspiration behind the designs. The backlash came from artisans and designers across India, particularly in Maharashtra, who noted the striking resemblance between the showcased sandals and the centuries-old handmade leather footwear known for its intricate detailing and heritage significance.

🗣️ Official Statement Recognizes Indian Influence

In an exclusive statement to NDTV, Prada’s Group Press Office shared:

Prada acknowledges that sandals inspired by traditional Indian footwear made in specific districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka, India, were featured in its Men’s 2026 Spring Summer show in Milan.

🏛️ Commitment to Ethical Design & Cultural Dialogue

The statement further emphasized Prada’s commitment to celebrating artisanal heritage across cultures:

“We are committed to responsible design practices, fostering cultural engagement, and opening a dialogue for a meaningful exchange with local Indian artisan communities… to ensure the rightful recognition of their craft.”

Prada also confirmed it is engaging with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture as part of its efforts to deepen ties with regional artisan networks and promote ethical collaboration in fashion.

🌍 A Step Towards Cultural Responsibility

While luxury fashion often walks a fine line between inspiration and appropriation, Prada’s acknowledgment may signal a growing awareness among high-end brands to credit and uplift indigenous crafts that inspire global trends. For Indian artisans whose skills have been passed down through generations, this recognition could pave the way for greater visibility and fair representation on international stages.
