New Delhi: In the midst of the India-Maldives diplomatic discord, ace Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has voiced his stance, rallying behind Indian tourism. Shami not only extended his support to the country’s travel sector but also encouraged fellow citizens to explore the enchanting allure of Indian beaches.
Advocating Indian Tourism: Shami’s Perspective
As tensions escalate over derogatory comments and perceived ‘anti-India’ sentiments from Maldivian officials post Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, Shami expressed his unwavering endorsement for Indian tourism. In an interview with ANI, he emphasized the need to promote domestic tourism, irrespective of the ongoing geopolitical dynamics.
“We should promote our tourism. No matter which way the country moves forward, it is good for everyone. PM is trying to make our country move forward, so we should also support it,” Shami conveyed to ANI.
MATI’s Condemnation and Acknowledgment of India’s Support
The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) strongly denounced the disparaging remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian populace by Maldivian ministers and public figures. Recognizing India as a steadfast ally, MATI highlighted India’s historical role as a first responder to crises in the Maldives.
“India is one of our closest neighbours and allies. India has always been a first responder to various crises throughout our history, and we are immensely grateful for the close relationship that the government and the people of India have maintained with us,” MATI stated in a press release.
Unraveling the India-Maldives Row
The dispute unfolded when the Maldives deputy minister, accompanied by cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging remarks about PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. On January 2, PM Modi shared his ‘exhilarating experience’ of snorkelling in Lakshadweep, posting pictures of pristine beaches and azure skies.
In response, the Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made a mocking reference to PM Modi in a now-deleted post. The incident triggered a massive row, drawing support from Indians, including cricketers and film celebrities.
Celebrities Rally Behind PM Modi’s Call for Beach Tourism
In the aftermath, Indian celebrities, including cricketers and film stars, have openly endorsed the promotion of local beach destinations and other tourist spots. They have echoed support for PM Modi’s initiative to boost beach tourism in Lakshadweep.
As the diplomatic tensions persist, Shami’s advocacy for domestic tourism aligns with the broader sentiment of promoting India’s natural beauty and tourist destinations. The call to embrace the enchanting beaches of the nation resonates not only with Shami but also with a chorus of voices across various sectors, fostering unity in promoting the diverse and captivating landscapes of India.
