Intense Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu Till December 4

In the latest meteorological development, Cyclone Michaung is set to make its presence felt along the coast of Tamil Nadu. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning, forecasting heavy to very heavy rains in the northern coastal districts and interior regions. The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is anticipated to intensify into a cyclonic storm by December 3.

Cyclone Path and Arrival Date

Cyclone Michaung is projected to reach the west central Bay of Bengal, off the south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, by the morning of December 4. Subsequently, it will move nearly northwards, closely parallel to the south Andhra Pradesh coast. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5 forenoon, according to the latest bulletin from the IMD.

Regional Impact and Rainfall Predictions

S. Balachandran, the Deputy Director-General of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, highlights the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rains in specific districts. Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore are expected to experience significant rainfall. Schools in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Yanam will remain closed as the IMD issues a ‘yellow’ alert due to Cyclone Michaung’s anticipated arrival by December 4.

Rainfall Statistics

Balachandran reports that, from October 1 until now, the region has recorded 34 cm of rainfall, slightly below the normal 36 cm expected during the North East Monsoon period.

Preparedness and Response Measures

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), led by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, conducted a review of the preparedness of state governments and central ministries for the impending Cyclone Michaung. In response to the potential threat, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 18 teams to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Puducherry. Additionally, 10 extra teams are on standby. The Coast Guard, Army, and Navy have organized rescue and relief teams, along with ships and aircraft, ready for deployment.

Coastal districts in northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh are on high alert, bracing for the impact of Cyclone Michaung in the early days of the upcoming week. Stay tuned for live updates and follow safety guidelines issued by relevant authorities to ensure preparedness and well-being during this weather event.
