JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, described the signal received late Sunday night as nothing short of a “miracle.” This achievement is especially noteworthy considering the probe’s initial design did not account for survival during the lunar night, where temperatures plummet to a bone-chilling minus 170 degrees Celsius (minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit).

SLIM’s Unconventional Journey

The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, known as SLIM, executed a precise touchdown on January 20, marking Japan as the fifth country to successfully position a probe on the lunar surface. However, SLIM encountered an unforeseen challenge as it landed inverted, hindering its solar panels from capturing sunlight. Within hours, the probe had to be powered down. Fortunately, SLIM regained functionality on the eighth day post-landing when it finally basked in the sun’s rays.

Geologic Exploration and Temporary Hibernation

In its operational phase, SLIM diligently collected geological data from moon rocks. In late January, the probe entered a temporary hibernation phase, anticipating the onset of another lunar night.

Communication Amidst Lunar Challenges

JAXA explained that the brevity of Sunday’s communication was due to SLIM being in “lunar midday,” experiencing an elevated temperature of approximately 100 Celsius (212 Fahrenheit). The agency is gearing up for renewed contact after the lander cools down.
