Morne Morkel Appointed India’s Bowling Coach
A New Era for Indian Cricket
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the appointment of Morne Morkel as the bowling coach of the Indian men’s team. This move marks a significant development in the team’s coaching staff, with Morkel bringing a wealth of experience to the role.
The Recommendation
Morkel’s appointment was recommended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, with whom he worked alongside for two seasons at Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This familiarity is expected to facilitate a smooth transition and effective collaboration.
A Proven Track Record
Morkel, a former South African fast bowler, boasts an impressive international career spanning 12 years, with 544 wickets in 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is. Since retiring, he has gained valuable experience as a bowling consultant with various teams worldwide, including Pakistan, New Zealand, and Namibia.
Challenges Ahead
Morkel faces immediate challenges, including maintaining India’s fast bowling bench strength during a packed schedule of five home Tests and a tour of Australia, where they will play a five-Test series for the first time since 1992.
Completing the Coaching Staff
Morkel’s appointment completes India’s coaching staff, which now comprises:
- Head Coach: Gautam Gambhir
- Assistant Coaches: Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate
- Bowling Coach: Morne Morkel
- Fielding Coach: T Dilip
The Future of Spin Bowling
While Morkel’s focus will be on fast bowling, the team management is also keen to develop a pool of spinners beyond R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav. Sairaj Bahutule, the former India legspinner, may continue to be involved as a spin consultant, although his role is yet to be confirmed.
A New Chapter
Morkel’s appointment marks a new chapter in Indian cricket, with the team poised to benefit from his expertise and experience. As the team prepares for a busy schedule ahead, Morkel’s influence will be crucial in shaping the bowling attack and driving success.
