New Principal of RG Kar Hospital Sacked Amid Students’ Protests

Introduction

The newly appointed principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Dr. Suhrita Paul, has been removed from her position following intense protests by students against the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the premises of the college.

Background

The incident occurred on August 9, when the body of a junior doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College, showing multiple serious injuries. The autopsy report confirmed that the woman had been raped and strangled to death.

Students’ Protests

The students’ protests against the administration intensified, leading to the removal of Dr. Paul from her position. The students had also demanded the removal of the hospital superintendent and the head of the Chest Department, who were also sacked.

Appointment Controversy

Dr. Paul’s appointment as the principal of the college on August 12 was met with a massive backlash by the doctor fraternity and medical students, as it coincided with the transfer of former dean Sandip Ghosh to the prestigious Calcutta’s National Medical College.

Investigation

The CBI has been investigating the case and grilled former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day. A former deputy superintendent of RG Kar has also moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking an ED investigation against Ghosh, alleging financial irregularities during his tenure.

Demands for Justice

The students and medical fraternity are demanding justice for the victim and action against those responsible for the heinous crime. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for improved security measures in medical colleges and hospitals.

Conclusion

The removal of Dr. Paul and other officials is a step towards addressing the concerns of the students and medical fraternity. However, the incident highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety and security of medical professionals and students.
