In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in Japan claiming nearly 100 lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to express his sympathies to Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida.
Modi’s Heartfelt Message
“I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones,” stated PM Modi, conveying his heartfelt sorrow.
Solidarity and Support
Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s unwavering support and solidarity with Japan during this challenging time. “As a special strategic and global partner, India highly values its relationship with Japan. We stand ready to provide all possible assistance in the wake of this disaster,” he affirmed.
The Tremor’s Impact
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula and its surrounding areas in central Japan, rendering nearly inaccessible regions due to rubble and severed roads. As a result, search and rescue operations faced significant challenges, with the disaster claiming the lives of at least 94 individuals. Moreover, around 33,000 people were displaced from their homes, and over 200 individuals were reported missing, according to Reuters.
Challenges in Rescue Operations
Due to the extensive damage, the northern part of the remote Noto Peninsula remained off-limits for over 24 hours. Prime Minister Kishida, during a disaster emergency meeting, highlighted the restricted access, attributing it to a damaged road rendering the location inaccessible.
Wajima City’s Plight
Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture bore the brunt of structural damage and fires triggered by the earthquake. Fire department reports indicated the collapse of 25 buildings, including houses. Notably, Asaichi Street, a popular tourist spot, saw approximately 200 buildings, including shops and houses, succumb to fires.
Earthquake Details
The United States Geological Survey pinpointed the earthquake’s occurrence on the Noto Peninsula at around 4:10 pm (local time), with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Global Assistance Offered
In a display of international cooperation, the United States pledged its readiness to provide military, logistical support, and aid to the severely affected areas in Japan.
In reiterating India’s commitment to its strategic partnership with Japan, PM Modi’s message not only conveys condolences but also emphasizes the strength of the bond between the two nations during times of crisis. The global response, including the United States’ offer of assistance, underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in times of natural disasters.
