Tamil Nadu Set to Become ‘Green Hydrogen Capital of India’
India’s First Commercial Green Hydrogen Production Unit
Tamil Nadu is poised to become the ‘green hydrogen capital of India’ with the launch of the country’s first commercial production of large-scale green hydrogen molecules in Tuticorin district. Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries is investing Rs 36,238 crore in a green hydrogen/green ammonia manufacturing unit in the port city.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Chief Minister M K Stalin during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2024 in Chennai. State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa hailed the project, stating that Tamil Nadu would be the first state in India to roll out commercial production of large-scale green hydrogen molecules.
Project Details
- Location: 160-acre plant in the key port area of Tuticorin
- Initial Production: 200,000 metric tonne per annum of green ammonia for export to Japan
- Front-end Engineering and Design: Work has commenced
- Land Acquisition: Secured in Tuticorin port
- Offtake Agreement: Signed for the export of green ammonia from India to Japan
Strategic Partnership
The project represents a significant collaboration between India, Singapore, and Japan. Vipul Tuli, Chairman – South Asia, and CEO – Hydrogen Business, Sembcorp Industries, highlighted the deep cultural and investment ties between Tamil Nadu, Singapore, and Japan.
Tamil Nadu’s Pioneer Status
Tamil Nadu has been a pioneer in the wind industry, and this new investment in hydrogen cements its position as a leader in the field. The state’s proactive approach to renewable energy has made it an attractive destination for investors.
Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production
The plant will produce green ammonia, a clean energy carrier that can be used as a fuel or feedstock for industrial processes. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources, is a crucial component in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Conclusion
Tamil Nadu’s emergence as the ‘green hydrogen capital of India’ marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards a sustainable future. The collaboration between India, Singapore, and Japan demonstrates the growing importance of international partnerships in driving the global energy transition.
