Vijayakanth’s Health Struggle Takes a Tragic Turn

Chennai mourns the loss of the legendary actor-politician, Vijayakanth, who breathed his last at the age of 71 after battling a severe illness related to COVID-19. The DMDK party shared the heartbreaking news earlier today on its official communication platform, revealing that Vijayakanth had been admitted to a hospital and placed on ventilator support due to respiratory distress.

A Storied Career in Cinema and Politics

From Silver Screen to Political Arena

Vijayakanth, fondly known as ‘Captain,’ not only left an indelible mark on the Tamil film industry with a staggering 154 movie appearances but also transitioned into a dynamic political figure. His journey began with remarkable contributions to the Nadigar Sangam, officially recognized as the South Indian Artistes’ Association (SIAA), where he spearheaded transformative initiatives.

Birth of DMDK: A Political Odyssey

In 2005, Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam (DMDK), marking a significant foray into politics. The party faced its initial electoral challenges in 2006, securing only 10 percent of the total vote share. However, 2011 proved to be a watershed moment as the DMDK, in alliance with the AIADMK, clinched victory in 26 out of 41 constituencies, surpassing the DMK and establishing itself as the principal Opposition Party.

Political Triumphs and Challenges

Leading Tamil Nadu’s Opposition

Vijayakanth’s leadership prowess was evident as he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016. His tenure saw remarkable political developments, but differences of opinion led to the DMDK severing ties with the AIADMK. Consequently, the party faced resignations from its MLAs, losing its status as the primary Opposition party.

Legislative Legacy

Vijayakanth, a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly, represented the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. His political journey, however, encountered setbacks in the 2014 parliamentary elections when the DMDK, in alliance with the NDA, suffered a significant defeat.

Health Struggles and Electoral Challenges

In subsequent elections in 2016, 2019, and 2021, the DMDK faced electoral setbacks as Vijayakanth battled health complications. The party’s vote percentage witnessed a decline, reflecting the challenges posed by the leader’s health struggles.

A Final Goodbye

Vijayakanth’s body has been brought to his residence and will soon be moved to the DMDK office, allowing supporters to pay their last respects. The iconic ‘Captain’ may have left the earthly stage, but his contributions to cinema and politics will be eternally remembered in the hearts of the people he served and inspired.
